the Matching Law
This article introduces the quantitative analysis of choice behavior by describing a number of equations developed over the years to describe the relation between the allocation of behavior under concurrent schedules of reinforcement and the consequences received for alternative responses. Direct proportionality between rate of responding and rate of reinforcement was observed in early studies,...
متن کاملThe Matching Law in Hamsters
Most studies of the matching law have used pigeons or rats. Hamsters usually do not consume food immediately but store it in their cheek pouches. In the present experiment, three hamsters were trained on Concurrent Variable Interval-Variable Interval (Cone VI-VI) schedules with food reinforcement in an operant chamber with two levers. The value of the VI schedule was changed from 10 s to 90 s. ...
متن کاملFrictional Matching: Evidence from Law School Admission
We measure friction in the matching of students and law schools as the number of unnecessary student applications and school admissions that have to be undertaken per actual matriculation. We show that friction increases with student and school attractiveness, but decreases for top schools and students. We discuss connections with the literature on frictional matching. JEL: D02, C78.
متن کاملThe application of the matching law to simple ratio schedules.
where P is number of responses, k is a constant, n is the average number of responses required for one reinforcement, and R. is the reinforcement for other alternatives.2 This paper considers briefly the empirical adequacy of this equation in predicting responding under ratio schedules. Equation 1 predicts two effects of questionable generality: (a) responding should decrease as the average val...
متن کاملThe Actor-Critic Learning Is Behind the Matching Law: Matching Versus Optimal Behaviors
The ability to make a correct choice of behavior from various options is crucial for animals' survival. The neural basis for the choice of behavior has been attracting growing attention in research on biological and artificial neural systems. Alternative choice tasks with variable ratio (VR) and variable interval (VI) schedules of reinforcement have often been employed in studying decision maki...
